HomeGrid Forum Forms Clean Tech Working Group

HomeGrid Forum, today announced the formation of a Clean Tech Working Group to support technology innovations in next-generation home networking products. So far seven organisations have joined (University of British Columbia, Offsetters Clean Technologies, British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT), Future Shop (Best Buy Canada), BC Hydro,  Corinex Communications Corporation and BC Hydro). The working group will be chaired by Corinex.

HomeGrid Forum, was setup as a non-profit trade group promoting the United Nations' International Telecommunication Union's (ITU-T) G.hn standardization efforts throughout the world.

The G.hn standard is designed to deliver a unified technology for the wired home network that addresses key issues of service providers, electronics manufacturers, and consumers alike. Through one worldwide standard, G.hn will unify the networking of content and devices over any wire -- coax cable, phone, and power lines. G.hn enables utilities to provide communication for the smart grid program; service providers to deploy new offerings, including IPTV, more cost effectively; CE manufacturers to deliver powerful devices for connecting all types of entertainment, home automation, and security products throughout the house; while greatly simplifying the consumer purchasing and installation processes.

The Clean Tech Working Group will evaluate new G.hn-based products for their ability to enable environmental sustainability and economic development. In addition, the group will advocate for the development of this unified platform for the wired home network and help guide HomeGrid Forum member companies in the delivery of products that support the Clean Tech ethos.
