Airvana To Demonstrate Femtocell Connected Digital Home at CTIA Wireless
Airvana, Inc. the company transforming the mobile experience, today announced that it will showcase the company's pioneering efforts in the development and deployment of femtozone applications at CTIA Wireless 2009, taking place in Las Vegas from April 1-3. Attendees to Airvana's booth (8035) will see first-hand how the company's HubBub(TM) femtocell can become the center of the connected digital home by bridging consumers' mobile and home environments through converged services and location-based intelligence.
The live CTIA demo shows the use one of the distinguishing characteristics of the femtocell, namely the ability to provide accurate presence information of handsets in the home, to create unique femtozone services. In the live demo, as a family member carrying a mobile phone enters or departs the "HubBub Zone," the femtocell automatically generates an SMS text message - "I got home" or "I am leaving home" - to another family member away from home and connected to the commercial macro network. These messages can be transmitted equally well to other media such as e-mail or Facebook pages.
This demonstration follows Airvana's demonstration at Mobile World Congress 2009 in February of another unique service-enabling functionality of the femtocell, namely that of local breakout, which is the ability to create direct connectivity between a mobile handset and a device connected to the home network through the femtocell. In the MWC demonstration, which will also be shown at CTIA, a picture from the mobile handset is automatically displayed on a digital picture frame as the handset enters the HubBub Zone. The femtocell creates direct connectivity between the handset and the digital frame, and the direct integration between the HubBub femtocell and the home network opens up new ways for consumers to manage and interact with their personal communications, content and entertainment. It also reduces costs by eliminating the need to move data across the operator's macro network.
Airvana's CTIA demonstrations are small yet powerful examples of the range of unique capabilities enabled by the femtocell to create a new class of compelling family communications and home digital media femtozone applications. Further, Airvana is developing an open application programming interface (API) for its femtocell technology to allow software developers to build their own femtozone applications for the HubBub femtocell.
"Improved coverage and performance are really the tip of the iceberg when considering the advantages femtocells bring to both subscribers and operators," explained Dave Nowicki, vice president of marketing and product management. "There is tremendous benefit in services that bridge the subscriber's mobile and home environments which is why we're taking an active, leadership role in the advancement of femtozone applications through our femtocells, software and supporting third party developers."
The company's support of femtozone applications adds to its complete line of femtocell solutions, including HubBub CDMA and UMTS femtocells, femtocell network gateways, Femtocell Service Manager, and a variety of integrated home gateway femtocell solutions.
