Broadcom has changed the way Microsoft mediaroom clients connect to each other, with the release of its Broadcom BCM4717V system-on-a-chip (SoC) solution. Previously, users with multiple set-top box would connect them together via wire network using MoCA, Ethernet or HPNA and connect to the TV.  The BCM4717 changes this and allow you to connect wirelessly throughout the home.

The Broadcom BCM4717 wireless SoC is the first chip on the market to offer Microsoft Mediaroom wireless client integration as a high definition embedded solution for set-top boxes.  According to Broadcom the solution was developed in conjunction with Microsoft.  Now providers have faster and cheaper way of deploying mediaroom client set-top boxes into customers’ homes. The Cisco ISB7005 IP set-top box and VEN401 are some of the first devices to have Mediaroom BCM4717 chip integrated.

The new solution offers the same quality of service (QoS), content sharing across multiple screens/devices such as TVs, PCs and mobile phones via Wi-Fi, the same robustness and reliability as wired to allow whole home digital video recording and easy distribution of HD videos.

Other IPTV solutions provided by BCM4717 are:

  • Operates primarily on the 5GHz band and is backward compatible with 2.5GHz legacy devices.
  • Integrated MIMO (Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output) radio and digital architecture to offer faster and more reliable wireless coverage.
  • Support for three direct antenna inputs inside of the STB.
