Home Gateway Initiative Sets Strategy for the Connected Home

To prepare for the next generation of connected home services and devices the Home Gateway Initiative (HGI) met in Paris to draw up its long term strategy.  As the voice for the world’s Broadband Service Providers (BSP), the initiative is the body responsible for translating BSP’s service plans into published technology requirements. Those at the meeting included Samsung, France Telekom and device manufacturers.

The Home Gateway of tomorrow will carry the majority of the online services that we subscribe to. Taking this into consideration and the changing connected home communication landscape; the strategy meeting drew up plans to analyse the next generation infrastructure.

The technologies considered were UPnP Telephony, DECT CAT-iq, RCS, SIP and applicable services such as Home Gateway, Internet Tablets, Connected TV and multimedia cordless devices.

Earlier this month the HGI held a workshop in Turin, where they presented detailed use cases, which will accelerate the global roll-out of home energy management (HEM) services.  According to Duncan Bees, HGI’s chief business and technical officer, the workshop was the first time they have been able to show detailed use cases with key industry stakeholders.

“I was very successful and has been an invaluable first step in evaluating and proposing available solutions to a interconnected home gateway equipment with energy management functions,” added Duncan.
