Why All Eyes Are On Maui's Smart Grid Infrastructure

The entire energy sector eyes are on Hawaii’s second largest island of Maui.  The island's electricity provider Maui Electric Company (MECO) and the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute at the University of Hawaii (HNEI) said they want to reduce their dependency on imported Diesel Oil.  Currently 15 percent of the island’s electricity is generated by renewable energy and they have set themselves an ambitious target of increasing this number to 70 percent by the year 2030. Therefore, Maui Island has become a test bed for the latest in smart grid technologies under a Japanese-businesses and US joint partnership.

Hitachi Leads Hawaiian Island Maui, Smart Grid Project

The Hawaiian island of Maui is about to become the site of a major Smart Grid project, to demonstrate the latest in smart grid technology.  The project is will be spearheaded by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) with Hitachi as the lead coordinator and project leader. The project comprises of a mixture of U.S. and Japanese businesses: Cyber Defense Institute, Sharp, Mizuho Bank, Hewlett-Packard Japan, JFE Engineering and Hitachi.

Hitachi and Panasonic To Collaborate On Smart Grid Solutions

In an effort to help and reduce the level of Carbon in the environment Hitachi and Panasonic are to join their respective technological knowhow to create products for the smart grid sector.  Both companies will jointly develop products and standardisation initiative within the smart grid community. The agreement is both companies are to establish a cooperative relationship in the smart community-related business in the global market with a goal of helping to realise a low-carbon society.

Hitachi is changing the way we interact with our external storage devices, with the release of the LifeStudio Drive family.  The LifeStudio drive does what the NuVo Music Port Server does, which is, it automatically pulls together and organizes your music, photos, videos and documents from your computer and any connected USB device or your social media outlets, but on a smaller scale. According to Hitachi, the Life Studio technology takes the frustration out of managing your digital content.
