IBM is collaborating with STMicroelectronics and Shaspa as part of a smarter home initiative, to create a cloud solution for service providers. All three companies will be at this year’s CES to demonstrate the solution, which features a TV linked to ST’s home gateway, running software from Shaspa and connected to the IBM cloud infrastructure.
All three businesses said the solution is driven by the desire to offer manufacturers and service providers innovative ways for us to manage and interact with home appliances connected to the network.
IBM and its Business Partner Telvent announced that they have been selected by Hydro One, the largest distributor of electricity in Ontario (Canada), for a new smart grid project that will help transform the province's electrical system. Together, the companies will run simulations and tests to determine the smart grid technologies that have the potential to improve power efficiency and reliability.
ThingWorx, the provider of the first application platform for the connected world is partnering with Carnegie Mellon’s Pennsylvania Smart Infrastructure Incubator (PSII). The ThingWorx platform will be used to gather and manage real-time information communicated by sensors and other connected devices tied to physical infrastructure.
Siemens has teamed up with the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (KCBPU), a publicly owned provider of electricity and water services to residences and businesses across Kansas City, Kan., to deliver eMeter Smart Grid Appliances. Each appliance includes a preloaded, rapidly deployable instance of eMeter EnergyIP meter data management system (MDMS) with IBM Tivoli and WebSphere software running on IBM Power Systems.
Sixteen of Europe’s leading smart grid solutions providers have come together to help develop a renewable energy focus smart grid. The European Union funded project called EcoGrid EU is a continuation of the EDISON (Electric Vehicles in a Distributed and Integrated Market using Sustainable Energy and Open Networks) project launched in 2009. With a mixture of old and new faces EcoGrid EU hopes to demonstrate an infrastructure with innovative smart technologies that others can follow.
IBM has joined a collaborative consortium to help develop an energy grid that uses at least 50 percent of renewable energy sources, such as wind power, solar energy and biogas. Led by a European Union-funded consortium, the EcoGrid EU project will demonstrate a smart energy grid that will allow smart devices to use renewable electricity based on near real-time pricing and availability.
IBM today announced that it has been selected by UIL Holdings Corporation, a Connecticut-based electric and natural gas delivery company, to help secure its smart meters and Advanced Metering Infrastructure from vulnerabilities and security attacks.
Sensus is incorporating encryption and key management technologies from IBM into its FlexNet Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system in an effort to advance data security as a critical component of the smart grid. The initiative will further enhance the existing security capabilities of the Sensus network infrastructure.
In conjunction with the semi-annual Global Intelligent Utility Network Coalition (GIUNC) meeting, IBM has announced its collaboration with Korea Electric Power Company (KEPCO), on the building of the Total Operations Center at the Jeju Smart Grid Test-Bed Demonstration Complex. The center will allow the 160 companies and 11 consortia members operating at the Jeju Complex to collect and manage information on all international markets, and monitor smart grid systems and data exchange.
