Microsoft Sells Mediaroom To Ericsson To Focus on Xbox
With the global IPTV market predicted to grow in revenue to $105 Billion (US) between now and 2015, Ericsson have move to become the number on IPTV provider by acquiring Microsoft Mediaroon platform. The acquisition according to Microsoft will give them room to concentrate on developing their Xbox platform even further.
For Ericsson this acquisition will put them in a position to play a comprehensive role in the global IPTV market. With current Microsoft Midiaroom customer such as AT&T U-verse, Telefonica, Swisscom, Entertain of Deutsche Telekom and more than 22 million set-top boxes.
Ericsson will now play a key role in providing entertainment to the estimated 76 million global IPTV subscribers. Ericsson said the acquisition lays the foundation for Ericsson’s TV anywhere strategy.
"Ericsson is positioned to be a valuable strategic partner for operators and TV service providers around the world as the IPTV market evolves", said Tom Gibbons.
Despite selling Mediaroom IPTV platform Microsoft hasn’t given up playing a part in the TV market. According to them they can now focus more on their consumer TV strategy with Xbox.
“Microsoft is dedicating all TV resources to Xbox in a continued mission to make it the premium entertainment service that delivers all the games and entertainment consumers want – whether on a console, phone, PC or Tablet”, said Microsoft.
