Beacon Power Corporation announced today that it has received approval from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) under the terms of its Smart Grid Stimulus Grant program to proceed to the second of three phases of funding for construction of the Company's next 20-megawatt (MW) flywheel energy storage plant, to be located in Hazle Township, Pennsylvania.

The U.S. Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology issued the following news release: The governing board of the Smart Grid Interoperability Panel (SGIP) has voted in favor of a new standard and a set of guidelines important for making the long-planned "smart" electricity grid a reality. The two documents address the need for wireless communications among grid-connected devices as well as the ability to upgrade household electricity meters as the Smart Grid evolves.
