Opera SDK 2.9 Adds Support for Broadcom BCM7420 Set-top Box Chipset

Earlier this month Opera announced that Sony will be selling their Bravia TVs with the Opera browser embedded, today Opera said their latest browser will support Broadcom’s Set-top Box SoC chipset BCM7420 as default.  Other platforms such as cable and satellite which include the BCM7400, BCM7405, and BCM7335 and next-generation 40nm devices such as the BCM7231 and BCM7425 are also supported.

Toshiba to Build Solar Smart Grid Project in Bulgaria

Through their ongoing relationship and on the back of successfully completing relating projects, Toshiba is planning the development of a major smart grid project in Bulgaria.  The project involve the building of a 10MW photovoltaic park capable of supplying electricity to up to 2000 homes.  The project is worth EUR 37.6M and will be near Yambol.  The project was announced during the visit of the Bulgarian Energy, Tourism and Energy Minister Traicho Traikov and a business delegation to Japan this week.

Petra Solar Opens World’s First Integrated Solar Network Operations Center

Petra Solar, the New Jersey based company whose SunWave™ systems combine distributed solar energy generation with Smart Grid communications and improved grid reliability features, celebrated today the grand opening of its Network Operations Center (NOC). The NOC will serve as Petra Solar’s command center where the company will use its Smart Grid management software to remotely monitor and control all solar and Smart Grid assets in the field, both in the U.S. and around the world.

Pioneer Releases 3D Blu-ray Players BDP-LX54 and BDP-430

Pioneer has release 3D Blu-ray players (BDP-LX54 and BDP-430) in Australia; the two players offer customers the latest in connectivity, such as HDMI, Ethernet and wireless.  Features include BD-Live, iControlAV app, 1080p High definition picture quality and the ability to convert standard DVDs to near HD quality. With support the latest in multi-channel audio, both models support the Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio formats.

Groton Electric Deploying Sequentric Smart Grid Technology

Sequentric Energy Systems, announced it has supplied its demand management hardware and software to Groton Electric Light Department of Groton, Massachusetts, for its smart grid deployment. The 2011 roll-out follows the successful pilot project initiated last summer to test the equipment, the installation process, customer acceptance and demand management performance.

Ember's Smart Grid Technology Fuels Best Year Yet

Ember the connected home solutions provider has declared 2010 has its best year yet. With over 10 million ZigBee chips shipped last year, they have become the first to have shipped that amount in one year. Ember attributes their growth to the strategic partnerships that they have formed and the increase in smart meter implementation worldwide. Their main areas of growth were in North America and Europe mainly the UK where the country’s main utility supplier British Gas is planning to provide a million customers with smart electricity and gas meters.

UMTS Forum Predicts a Billion Connected Devices by 2016

The UMTS FORUM has released a new report that predicts the global existence of one billion Consumer Electronics (CE) devices connected to mobile broadband networks by 2016. Titled “Two Worlds Connected: Consumer Electronics Meets Mobile Broadband”, the report explores the relationships between the CE and Cellular industries.  It predicts that CE device connectivity will outstrip overall wireless market growth over the next five years.

Palmchip AcurX51 and Palm8051 Core Targets Smart Grid

Palmchip has release a new AcurX51 SoC platform for the smart grid connectivity and home area network (HAN) solutions industry. The new AcurX51 is based on a customised version of the Intel 8051 processor core, which allows it to fit into environment that already has existing 8051 software tools.  It was designed with the green and smart grid community in mind; it is energy efficient, low cost and enables devices to be remotely managed.
